WE ARE SAFETY!
A new mentality is tasking over at Southern Cross Corp. A Sparus Company. That mentality is sharply focused on SAFETY. As a company working strongly together towards this goal, nothing can withstand our might. Together we will be our brother's keeper and rise up and take a stand against preventable accidents and injuries. This is a fight that can be won and will be won. We will be the VICTORS standing as one, Champions over Injury.
It is not a field of a few acres of ground, but a cause, that we are defending, and whether we defeat the enemy in one battle, or by degrees, the consequences will be the same.

OUR WEAPONS// Situational Awareness (SA)
Being aware of what is happening around you and understanding how information, events, and your own actions will impact your goals and objectives, both now and in the near future. By developing SA and being "good at it" a Technician can become more attuned and aware of his/her current surroundings and situation thus safety would become second nature. // Skills x7 There are seven skills that will improve your SA. One, divide work into manageable segments. Two, set way goals and do not become distracted. Three, track actual progress. Four, make allowance for sudden changes. Five, make adjustments within the constructs of the work plan and only the work plan. Six, identify problems early, this is key. Seven, react immediately or before, correct a minor infraction before it grows into a problem. | // Daily Actions1. Practice safe walking skills. If
you must walk on wet surfaces, take shorter steps to help maintain your center
of balance under you and point your feet slightly outward. Move slowly
and pay attention to the surface on which you are walking. ALWAYS use handrails,if
available.
2. Check your walking surface. On smooth surfaces be more cautious and move slowly on very slippery surfaces or floors that have been waxed, but not buffed. 3. Be aware of your surroundings and job site. Survey your work site carefully prior to starting the job. Take personal responsibility for keeping yourself safe. 4. Keep work area clean. Clean up spills immediately. Any kind of spill that you see, if possible clean it up yourself or report it to the appropriate person. Even minor spills can be very hazardous. Do not let grease, oil, or fluids accumulate on floors, around equipment or in walk areas. |
Why we do what we do.
IN THE BITE!
![Picture](/uploads/6/4/1/6/6416145/8908903.jpg?182)
"In the bite" is a phrase meant to
remind the Technician of their personal safety. With the lack of SA
(situational awareness) , a Technician usually end up in one or more of the
conditions which lead to being in the bite. Those conditions are being
rushed, fatigued, frustrated and/or complacent. A major hazard that these
conditions can lead to is slips, trips and falls. A hazard can be defined
as any unsafe act or unsafe condition that if left uncontrolled can result in
an accident. If you eliminate the hazard, you prevent the accident.
What then can we do to prevent slips, trips, and falls at work and at home???
Eliminate the hazards that are usually associated with these types of accidents. There may be conditions or
situations where walking or working on uneven terrain cannot be avoided. You may not be able to change
your workplace, but you can recognize dangers and take precautions in
help eliminate the hazards
WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO
Eight firefighters and a gas company worker were injured in an apparent natural gas explosion in Forestville, Maryland. Four of the firefighters and the gas worker were taken to the Medstar Burn Unit at the Washington Hospital Center. Two of the firefighters have since been treated and released. Two others, including a captain seen in the white helmet in the video above, are being held overnight for observation.
According to Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department Chief Spokesman Mark Brady, the fire department received a call around 12:55 PM for a report of a natural gas leak. They arrived at 3426 Donnell Drive and evacuated a number of businesses at the Penn Mar Shopping Center. Brady said 45 people were ushered out of the building.
At about 1:23 PM, with the gas company on the scene, an explosion occurred, causing the destruction of about 5 store fronts. A flash fire resulted. Firefighters and the gas worker were injured by both the fire and flying debris.
The building was so heavily damaged firefighters were not able to immediately go back in and search to make sure everyone got out safely.
On the firground audio you can hear a report from the rear of the structure that fire had broken out while firefighters were venting the structure. Moments later, as command attempted to determine what was burning, the explosion occurred and maydays were called
